Molti di noi non sanno che quando si dice Pan-Am si parla di una parte iconica e importante della storia Americana e globale. Prima di essa non si parlava di Jet-Leg e né di comodi viaggi Glamour oltreoceano.
La Pan American World Airways è stata una delle prime compagnie Aeree e grazie ad essa, se pur a discapito di incidenti storici, è possibile volare oggi da una parte all’altra del globo. Nata nel 1927 come “postino-volante” della U.S.Mail in breve tempo divenne un riferimento per coloro che per piacere e per necessità dovevano raggiungere luoghi lontani in breve tempo. Così negli anni ’50 Pan-Am divenne il miglior modo di volare e già nel 1962 era possibile prenotare voli e soggiorni direttamente sul PANAMAC un mega-computer che offriva un servizio completo ai propri clienti. Per consolidare il successo e la fama mondiale di Jumbo-jet, Piloti e avvenenti Hostess dalle rigorose forme perfette – nel centro di Manhattan venne edificato un Grattacielo che simboleggiasse l’importanza di Pan-Am. L’enorme crescita fu contrastata da gravi incidenti aerei che causarono molti decessi, si effettuarono però nuove ricerche per una maggiore sicurezza e la risoluzioni di problemi di volo. Pan-am dagli anni 30, attraversa così la seconda guerra mondiale, la guerra fredda e la caduta del muro di Berlino ma nel 1991 dichiara il fallimento.
Nel 2011 la ABC trasmette per 14 episodi una deliziosa Serie-tv dedicata alla Pan-Am e ai suoi aitanti Piloti e Hostess. Dopo essere passate alle dovute selezioni di bellezza, il quartetto di Hostess capitanato dalla temeraria Meggie (Christina Ricci), cercano di conciliare la vita da giovani donne nell’America degli anni 60 con gli impegni di viaggio.
Maggie è innamorata del presidente Kennedy e farebbe di tutto pur di conoscerlo, per questo scende ad ogni compromesso pur di raggiungere la vetta nella vita, nel lavoro e in amore. Colette, ebrea parigina cresciuta negli States, deve trovare un equilibrio amoroso con il pilota Dean e fare i conti con il proprio passato. Margot è la più bella, sta per sposarsi ma capisce di voler di più dalla vita quindi scappa con la sorella Kate che le trova un lavoro alla Pan-Am. Pan-Am sceglie Margot come Cover-Girl del magazine ufficiale ma non saranno gli unici ad accorgersi della sua florida bellezza. Kate è l’impavida del gruppo, costretta a diventare una spia durante la guerra fredda per consegnare e ritirare i messaggi diretti all’America da ogni parte del mondo. Il pericolo e il bon-ton vanno di pari passo nella sua vita fatta di jet-lag e missioni pericolose. L’amore, l’amicizia e la storia vera fanno da sfondo alle vicende dei protagonista tra un giro a Central Park e un salto segreto al Cremlino, per fuggire tra le strade di Berlino e gustare un aperitivo nei più esclusivi Hotel del mondo.
Nonostante la semplice piacevolezza delle storie narrate, la serie ha poca vita e non viene mai rinnovata. Da gustare e da guardare per chi ama le atmosfere retrò di anni in cui il cuore della storia è battuto a mille e per chi, come me, non resiste al fascino delle serie-tv cancellate. The Pan American World Airways was one of the first Aerial companies and thanks to it, though at the expense of awful crush, it is now possible to fly safe through the globe. Founded in 1927 as a ” air-postal-service” of U.S. Mail soon became a reference for those who had to reach distant places in a short time for fun or business. So in the ’50s Pan-Am became the best way to fly , and in 1962 it was possible to book flights and accommodation directly on PANAMAC a mega- computer that offered a complete service to its customers. To build on the success of the world famous Jumbo jet, pilots and attractive and perfect hostess, in the center of Manhattan was built a skyscraper – business building – which symbolize the importance of the Pan- Am. The huge growth was countered by serious aircraft accidents that caused many deaths and forced the search for greater security and bug-fixed flight. Since 30’s Pan -am went through World War 2, the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall but in 1991 Pan-Am declares bankruptcy.
In 2011, ABC network broadcasted for 14 weeks a delightful tv-series dedicated to Pan-Am and its stalwart Pilots and Hostess. After being selected – due to high standard beauty – the hostesses quartet, headed by reckless Meggie ( Christina Ricci ), try to reconcile the commitments of young women in America in the 60s with the busy travel schedule.
Maggie is in love with President Kennedy and would do anything to meet him, she comes down to any agreement in order to reach the top in life, in work and in love. Colette, the Parisian Jewish grew up in the States, has to reconcile her love for the Pilot Dean and reckon her own history in the years following World War 2. Margot is the most beautiful, when almost married she understand that wants more out of her life so runs off with her sister Kate, who finds Margot a job at Pan-Am. Pan -Am chooses Margot as the official magazine cover-girl and those at work are not the only ones to notice her stunning beauty. Kate is the fearless one, forced to become a spy during the Cold War to deliver and collect direct messages to America from all over the world. Danger and bon-ton go hand in hand in her life of jet- lag and dangerous missions. Love, friendship and the true story happening in those years are the main character of the story. A ride in Central Park and a secret jump to the Kremlin, an escape from the crowded streets of Berlin and a enjoyable aperitif in the most exclusive hotels in the world.
Despite the simple pleasure of the stories, the series has a short life and is never got renewed for a second season. To taste and to watch for those who love the retro atmosphere of years of history in which the heart is beating a lot and for those who, like me, can not resist the allure of canceled television series.
