Avevo già letto prima di adesso il più frivolo e celebre libro di Truman Capote, Colazione da Tiffany, ma ce n’era un altro che mi incuriosiva maggiormente per il clamore generato dalla sua uscita nel lontano 1966. A Sangue Freddo.
Era una fredda domenica mattina d’autunno come tante a Holocomb, Kansas. La famiglia Clutter avrebbe dovuto recarsi in chiesa come di consueto ma non lo fecero mai. La famiglia di Herbert Clutter, ricco agricoltore, era benvoluta rispettata e osservata con ammirazione dal vicinato. La notte del 15 novembre 1959 fu loro fatale.
Richard “Dick” Hickock – lo spavaldo sciupafemmine e Perry Smith – lo sfuggente ragazzo riflessivo, due ex-compagni di cella, organizzano una fuga col bottino che costerà la vita a questa malcapitata famiglia. Con brutale freddezza i quattro membri della famiglia Clutter vengono colti di sorpresa durante la notte, legati, derubati di pochi dollari e uccisi barbaramente.
Il fatto scuote l’intera cittadina, mentre i due malviventi si dedicano a vere e proprie scorribande tra il Kansas, il Messico e Miami. Non saranno i sensi di colpa ad incastrare i due galeotti ma la cieca certezza di Dick di non aver lasciato tracce che li riconducessero a quegli spregevoli atti.
Truman Capote seguirà con ossessiva partecipazione il caso. Diventerà un occhio indiscreto fuori e dentro la cella, per le strade dell’America e nelle stanze insanguinate di casa Clutter. Capote scandaglia accuratamente la psiche dei due assassini, cercando in loro il movente e un motivo plausibile che li avesse spinti a commettere una tale barbaria, dando alla stampa una voyeristica immagine di se e consegnando all’editore un capolavoro di giornalismo, cronaca nera e romanzo – che costerà a Capote grande sacrificio e una profonda dedizione.
Dalla semplice narrazione storica che trascina il lettore da una pagina all’altra fino diventare un amore meticoloso e inespresso di Capote che cerca nei suoi personaggi reali una via di fuga, una scusa valida per la redenzione, un nuovo finale che assolva i suoi protagonisti dalla pena di morte.
English / I had read before the most frivolous and famous book by Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but there was another one that intrigued me more to the hype generated since its release in 1966. In Cold Blood.
It was a cold autumn Sunday morning as many in Holocomb, Kansas. The Clutter family would have to go to church as usual but never did. The family of Herbert Clutter, wealthy farmer, was well-liked, respected and admired by the whole neighborhood. On the night of November 15, 1959 was fatal to them.
Richard “Dick” Hickock and Perry Smith, two former cellmates, organized an escape with the loot that will cost the lives of this unfortunate family. With brutal coldness, the four members of the Clutter family are caught out at night, tied, robbed of a few dollars and killed brutally.
The fact shakes the whole town and the two criminals are dedicated to real raids between Kansas, Mexico and Miami. Will not be their guilt sense to caught them but because of the blind certainty of Dick to had not left traces linking them to those despicable acts.
Truman Capote follow the case with obsessive involvement. Become a prying eyes outside and inside the cell, through the streets of America and in the rooms of the bloodied Clutter’s house. Capote thoroughly scours the psyche of the two killers, looking at their motive and a plausible reason that they had been driven to commit such barbarity, giving the press a voyeuristic picture of himself and delivering to his publisher a masterpiece of journalism, crime and romance – which will cost Capote great sacrifice and a profound dedication.
From simple historical narrative that pulls the reader from page to page to become a meticulous and unexpressed love of Capote to his reality characters an escape route, a valid excuse for the redemption, a new ending that fulfills its protagonists from death penalty.
