Benché siano passati anni dalla prima e dalla seconda volta in città, è sempre bello tornare nei luoghi del cuore. Così, come di consueto, quando arriva il compleanno di Gio arriva anche un break da lavoro. Questa volta, pensando che avremmo trovato un tempo soleggiato, abbiamo prenotato un volo per la Spagna.
BARCELONA
Noi alloggiamo all’hotel Mimic, un vecchio cinema minimale restaurato, situato a pochi passi da La Rambla.
Il cielo è nuvoloso ma per fortuna la pioggia è incostante e così ci godiamo tutta la città nella sua invernale bellezza. Muniti di una guida essenziale e dei consigli del web, siamo pronti a goderci un po’ di nuovi spot interessanti sparsi in varie zone.
Il buongiorno ce lo da Starbucks con un Tall-Cappuccino. Carichi di caffeina dedichiamo le ore a riscoprire tutta la bellezza di Barcellona che non vedo da ben 10 anni. Inutile dire che, in questo lungo lasso di tempo, le cose sono molto cambiate o forse siamo semplicemente noi ad osservarle in modo diverso.
Senza sosta percorriamo in lungo e in largo la Rambla per raggiungere i principali luoghi d’interesse. Il Barri Gòtic è senz’altro uno di questi. Ci soffermiamo più volte ad osservare la Cattedrale in tutta la sua bellezza, sarà a causa dei suoi molteplici volti: il chiostro gotico, le cappelle barocche o la sua facciata ottocentesca. Ci perdiamo nelle vie strette de La Ribera dove incrociamo numerosi palazzi medievali. Tra questi sorge lo splendido Museo Picasso che visitiamo per la prima volta. Il museo raccoglie opere di inestimabile valore che ripercorrono la vita artistica di Pablo sin dalla giovane età e non solo.
Alcuni stop doverosi li dedichiamo ai ristoranti e nella lista ci sono il Bio-local Flax & Kale nella zona universitaria, dove ordiniamo succo appena spremuto e un mix di riso e verdure piccanti tanto da liberare polmoni e arterie, e il più ricercato chic Bar Lobo non distante da La Rambla dove la cucina Catalana è rivisitata in chiave moderna.
Passeggiando ed osservando tutto ciò che ci circonda, dal via vai mattutino al caos pomeridiano, ci addentriamo nel Raval. Il MACBA ospita una mostra interessante ma è l’architettura dell’edificio lineare e incontaminato a catturare la nostra attenzione insieme al murales di Keith Haring. Facciamo un salto anche al CCCB dove si tiene una mostra dedicata al sesso e alle sue mille declinazione nel corso della storia. Non tralasciamo neanche i negozi, infatti visitiamo tutti gli Zara, Pull&Bear, Urban Outfitters e le altre catene low-cost per approfittare degli sconti.
Visitiamo il Parc Güell con la pioggia e non è proprio il massimo, ma appena le nuvole smettono di spiovere riusciamo a cogliere la bellezza dei mosaici trencadis con cui Antoni Gaudí decorò questo elegante parco dalle forme immaginifiche. Altra tappa imperdibile è la Sagrada Familia che, se pur ancora oggi sia incompleta, con la sua acuminata altezza rimane architettonicamente spettacolare e visivamente ammaliante. Passiamo in rassegna molti dei luoghi più belli della città ma a causa dei biglietti a prezzi elevati e significative file, preferiamo scavare tra i ricordi e – questa volta – osservarli dall’esterno.
Spinti dalla curiosità visitiamo anche due quartieri meno battuti. Il quartiere di Gracià, una ridente area residenziale con una sua quotidianità fatta di negozietti, viuzzole e piccole piazze; e il quartiere di San Antoni dove passiamo più volte per mangiare. Infatti ordiniamo un pranzo dall’influenze Australiane al Federal Café, dove gustiamo un ottimo burger e uova su un tavolo condiviso ma chic. La sera torniamo in zona per una cena vegetariana nel piccolo e local Tarannà.
Nonostante il cielo prometta tempesta, noi visitiamo impavidamente il Parc de la Ciutadella. Desolato e rabbuiato dalla tipica atmosfera invernale, risulta lo stesso splendido e un po’ sinistro con i suoi ampi spazi, l’Arco di Trionfo, l’elegante fontana, le palme scosse dal vento e l’apparentemente abbandonato Museo di Scienze Naturali.
Il giorno seguente ci spingiamo un po’ fuori città per vedere la Fundació Joan Miró e lo splendido Castello di Montjuic. Se il primo è un’elegante percorso attraverso l’arte dell’omonimo artista Catalano in una raccolta di oltre 400 opere tra dipinti, bozzetti e sculture, il secondo è una antico Castello costituito da una tenebrosa muraglia utilizzata come carcere e luogo di tortura nel passato. Saliamo sulle mura per godere della splendida vista sulla città e sul porto. Nonostante il sole risplenda, il vento è così forte che a malapena riusciamo a tenere gli occhi aperti. Scendiamo a piedi e percorriamo il parco adiacente all’altrettanto splendido e sorprendente Palau National.
Senza accorgercene ci ritroviamo nella lunga via dello shopping di lusso e, al tramonto, passeggiamo lasciandoci alle spalle Casa Batlló e La Pedrera che, con un pizzico di rammarico, non rivediamo. Passeggiamo ancora lungo la Rambla prima di saltare su un treno diretto a Girona dove trascorreremo l’ultima piovosissima notte prima della partenza.
Avremmo visitato meglio Girona, splendida nella sua peculiarità, senza l’incessante pioggia e i piedi bagnati per godere a pieno del vecchio anfiteatro e di quell’atmosfera tipicamente Medievale. Dato che l’acqua scrosciava, l’abbiamo osservata in tutta fretta al fresco di febbraio sotto l’ombrello. Ma si sa, anche questo fa parte dell’avventura.

Although some years have passed from my latest visits to the city, it is always beautiful to come back to places you love. As usual, when Gio’s birthday arrives, along comes a work-break. This time, thinking we would have found sunny days, we booked a direct flight to Barcelona.
BARCELONA
We are staying at the Mimic Hotel, a restored minimalist movie theater, located just a few steps away from La Rambla.
The sky is cloudy but fortunately, the rain is unstable and so we enjoy the whole city in its winter beauty. Equipped with an essential guide and web tips we are ready to enjoy some new interesting spots of the city in various areas.
Starbucks wake us up with a Tall Cappuccino. Coffee loaded we dedicate our time to rediscovering all the beauty of Barcelona – that I have not seen for 10 years. Needless to say, in this long time, things have changed a lot or maybe we are just looking at them differently.
Without a break, we ride along the Rambla long and wide to reach the major places of interest. The Barri Gotic is certainly one of these. We stop to look at the cathedral in all its beauty many times, because of its many facets: the gothic cloister, the baroque chapels or its nineteenth-century façade. We lose ourselves in the narrow streets of La Ribera where we cross many medieval palaces. Among them rises the splendid Picasso Museum that we visit for the first time. The museum collects works of inestimable value that reflect Pablo’s artistic life since a young age and beyond.
We also take time to enjoy good meals. On our list, there are the bio-local Flax & Kale – located in the university area – where we order freshly squeezed juice and a mix of rice and vegetables, spicy enough to release lungs and arteries, and the most sought-after Lobo Bar close to La Rambla where Catalan cuisine is revisited in modern style.
Walking and watching everything around us, from morning wake to daily chaos, we go into Raval. The MACBA hosts an interesting exhibition but is the linear and uncontaminated building architecture to capture our attention along with Keith Haring‘s mural. We also take a leap at the CCCB where we visit an exhibition dedicated to sex and its thousands of declinations throughout history. We do not miss out on the shop, we visit Zara, Pull & Bear, Urban Outfitters and other low-cost chains to take advantage of sales.
We visit Parc Güell with the rain and it’s not really the best, but as soon as the clouds stop spinning we can see the beauty of the trencadis mosaics with which Antoni Gaudi decorated this elegant park with imaginative shapes. Another unmissable stop is the Sagrada Familia which, although still incomplete today, with its acuminate height remains architecturally spectacular and visually enchanting. We look at many of the city’s most beautiful places but because of high-priced tickets and significant queues, we prefer to dig into the memories and – this time – to enjoy them from the outside.
Driven by curiosity we also visit two less wretched neighborhoods. The neighborhood of Gracià, a lovely residential area with its daily life made of shops, little streets and small squares; And the San Antoni neighborhood where we spend several times eating. In fact, we order lunch in the Australian influenced restaurant Federal Café, where we enjoy excellent burgers and eggs on a shared but chic environment. In the evening we return to San Antoni neighborhood to have a vegetarian dinner in the harvest and very local Tarannà.
Despite the sky’s promising storm, we are visiting the Parc de la Ciutadella impetuously. Desolate and rabbited by the typical winter atmosphere, it is the same splendid and somewhat sinister with its wide spaces, the Arc de Triomphe, the elegant fountain, the palm trees shook by the wind and the apparently abandoned Museum of Natural Science.
The following day we go a little out of town to see the Fundació Joan Miró and the splendid Montjuic Castle. If the first is an elegant path through the art of the homonymous Catalan artist in a collection of over 400 works of paintings, sketches, and sculptures, the second is an ancient Castle made up of a dark wall used as a prison and a place of torture in past. We climb on the walls to enjoy the beautiful views of the city and the harbor. Despite the sun shining, the wind is so strong that we can barely keep our eyes open. We walk down the path through the adjacent park to the equally beautiful and surprising Palau National.
Without realizing it, we find ourselves in a long way to luxury shopping and at sunset we walk away leaving behind Casa Batllò and La Pedrera, which, with a bit of regret, we do not visit. In the afternoon we walk along the Rambla before we jump on a direct train to Girona where we will spend the last rainy night before departure.
We would have visited Girona better, gorgeous in its timidity, without the ceaseless rain and wet feet to enjoy full of the old amphitheater and that typically medieval atmosphere. As the water was raging we watched it in a hurry in a freezing February evening under the umbrella. But you know, this is part of the adventure.
