Lo scorso anno in quel di Bruxelles, per sfuggire alle uggiose giornate di pioggia, avevo trovato l’antidoto perfetto “Smash“.
Il mito di Marilyn Monroe non è mai tramontato e non ha mai abbandonato le mire di registi e scrittori talentuosi con il desiderio di inscenare la sua vita in un libro biografico, un biopic o addirittura un Musical. Nasce così l’idea , dalla mente creativa della candidata al Premio Pulitzer nel 2004 Theresa Rebeck, di puntare i riflettori sulla vita di Marylin in un Musical dentro al Musical per la tv, “Smash“. Prodotta da Steven Spielberg la serie, cancellata dopo la seconda stagione dalla NBC, racconta i retroscena dalla produzione al palco di Broadway.
Karen (Katharine McPhee), sbarca a New York dalla provincia americana in cerca di fortuna, ed entra subito in competizione con la veterana di Broadway, Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty), per il ruolo di Marilyn nel Musical Bombshell. L’atmosfera si scalda quando il regista Derek Willis (Jack Devemport) , sciupafemmine navigato, tenta di concupire le due ragazze l’una all’insaputa dell’altra aumentando incomprensioni e rivalità sul palcoscenico.
Mentre Julia (Debra Messing) e Tom (Christian Borle) lavorano incessantemente per perfezionare il musical impossibile, Eileen (Angelica Houston) – la neo producer appena divorziata – tenterà di ottenere i fondi necessari per metterlo in scena. Tra un balletto e l’altro, l’indecisione sulla prescelta ci guida fino all’ultimo episodio dove non mancheranno rivalità, tradimenti, conquiste e rivelazioni scottanti.
Riprendono i preparativi per Broadway e Karen inizia un’amicizia speciale con Jimmy (Jeremy Jordan) che si rivela ricco di talento inespresso. Quando Derek abbandona la produzione di Bombshell, Karen convince il regista a dare una chance a Kyle (Andy Mientus) e Jimmy che hanno scritto storia e canzoni di Hitlist. Lo show sembra attirare l’attenzione degli addetti ai lavori, tanto da mettere in pericolo il preannunciato e lungamente atteso successo di Bombshell, ma chi riuscirà a conquistare il pubblico e guadagnare più premi durante i Tony Awards?
Tra semplicità e momenti corali, ci ritroviamo al tempo di Saranno Famosi alle prese con musica, danza e successo a New York. Le cover famose si alternano alle tipiche canzoni da Musical, le relazioni si susseguono in un saliscendi emozionale e il sogno di Broadway diventa sempre più concreto fino a sfiorare storyline ovvi e un finale forzato ma in gran stile. E nonostante Spielberg assoldi nomi celebri per qualche cameo imperdibile- da Jennifer Hudson a Bernadette Peters, da Uma Thurman a Liza Minnelli – lo show non decolla abbastanza per assicurarsi una terza stagione.
Che abbia conquistato gli spettatori o che li abbia lasciati con l’amaro in bocca, io metto la mia copia dvix di Smash sullo scaffale, dove andrò a cercarlo ogni volta che avrò voglia di sognare di Marilyn, di Broadway e di New York.

English / Last year in Brussels, to escape the gloomy rainy days, i had found the perfect antidote it is called “Smash“. The myth of Marilyn Monroe has never gone and never abandoned the aims of talented directors and writers with a desire to tell her life in a biography, a biopic or even a Musical. Thus was born the idea, from the creative mind of Pulitzer Prize nominee Theresa Rebeck, she put the spotlight on the life of Marilyn in a Musical in the Musical for the TV called “Smash.” Steven Spielberg produced the series canceled after the second season on NBC.
Karen (Katharine McPhee), arrives in New York from rural America in search of fortune, and goes right into competition with Broadway veteran, Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty), for the role of Marylin in the Musical Bombshell. The atmosphere heats up when the director Derek Willis (Jack Devemport), sailed womanizer, try to covet the two girls increasing misunderstandings and rivalry on the stage. While Julia (Debra Messing) and Tom (Christian Borle) work tirelessly to perfect the impossible musical, Eileen (Angelica Houston) – neo producer and newly divorced – will attempt to obtain the necessary funds to put it on stage. Between a ballet and the other, the indecision on the chosen Marylin guides us to the last episode where there will be rivalry, betrayal, achievements and revelations burning. During Season two, while reflecting the preparations to Broadway, Karen begins a special friendship with Jimmy (Jeremy Jordan) who reveals rich in untapped talent. When Derek leaves the production of Bombshell, Karen convinces him to give a chance to Kyle (Andy Mientus) and Jimmy who wrote history and songs for the musical Hitlist. The Off-Broadway Musical seems to attract the attention of the experts, so as to endanger the much anticipated and long awaited success of Bombshell, but who will win the audience and earn more rewards during the Tony Awards?
Between simplicity and choral moments, we find ourselves at the time of Fame struggling with music, dance and success in New York. The famous covers alternate with typical Musical’ songs, reports will follow in a emotional ups and downs and the dream of Broadway becomes more concrete until it touches obvious storyline and an ending forced, but in style. And despite Spielberg add famous names for some great cameos – Jennifer Hudson Bernadette Peters, Liza Minnelli by Uma Thurman – the show does not take off enough to make it to a third season. It may conquered the audience or not, I put my dvix copy of Smash on the shelf, where I’ll look for it whenever I feel like dreaming of Marilyn, of Broadway and New York.
