It was the beginning of a weekend by the sea, and so with the desire to relax and read something completely disengaged but delicious, I stumbled economic edition of “The Best of Everything.” I briefly browsed pages, gave a cursory look at the beginning and I knew I had chosen the right book.
Born as a simple fiction book for women Rona Jaffe’ The Best Of Everything, became a literary event in 1958 when introduced to the public. The book is a collection of stories of ordinary American girls, calling in the Big Apple in search of fortune, job and the perfect husband and then the book turn into a work of literature that traces the perfect profile of Americas in those years full of expectations. Realistic and disillusioned, Rona Jeffe, tells the real life made of dreams and disappointments and follows the complicated stories of Caroline, the heroine of the book, Gregg, April and Barbara. Different but share the desire to find the right man, marry him and move outside the city. Lost among celebrities, Fifth Avenue and Fabian, the publishing house where they all work together, Caroline and her girlfriends will have to unravel complex issues and controversial at the time, such as sex, betrayal, obsession and the rise as business women. Rona Jeffe, died in 2005, journalist and writer has published several successful books. The literary event The Best Of Everything has a film adaptation with Hope Lange, Joan Crawford and Stephen Boyd. The Jaffe also gave birth to the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award for promising young women American writers.
